Nokia trying to draft iPhone momentum (and backlash)

Picture_3

So check this out. Nokia has launched a new website with the simple message: We think your phone should be open. With the rift between Apple and its user base widening (or at least maddening) it’s instructive to see what other phone companies are doing. Nokia, long the largest mobile phone company in the world and no stranger to great design is now adding good marketing to their strategy. We’ll see where this goes. Will the other players stay on the sidelines? Now is a great time to jump in. Just look at what all this phone publicity has done for RIMMs stock. Stay tuned!

  1. The only trouble with that type of adverting is it looks ridiculous if (or once) your target implements what you’re pointing out or criticizing. If rumors are correct (there will be a massive update and an SDK once Leopard is released) that moment of reckoning for Nokia could be near.
In a similar vein, I listen to TwIt and MacBreak but usually a few days later. Leo and the gang many times get into a big huff over something that is totally negated by the time I’m listening. It makes me laugh, so much energy expended over nothing.
My point is one can be too quick on the trigger both in broadcasting and marketing. Both with a laughable result.

  2. I should add…
I think the Apple “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads work because they are highlighting long known issues that won’t change anytime soon. If they chose more immediate/timely issues, they would/could have the same problem as Nokia and Leo.
